Grim is the first intact male I've had and I'm not sure what to do about this. I feel stupid asking, but we could use some help.

Yesterday I noticed Grim had a black swollen spot on his testicles that looked like maybe an infected hair gone bad. I didn't think we should pop it, so I made an appointment at the vet for this morning. By evening it had swollen up like a boil, and the testicle sack (is that the proper term?) was also swelling. By morning the sack had doubled in size, and the black spot had popped and was draining a little, and another black spot had risen next to it like a big zit. He's very uncomfortable, but not in pain.

At the vet they checked the testicles for torsion and they seem alright. We talked about neutering him (it's going to happen eventually anyway) but they aren't set up to do it on a Saturday. So we gave him an ant-inflammatory shot and antibiotics to see if we can get the swelling down, and if it doesn't clear up by Monday his boys are coming off. If it gets worse we'll go to the emergency vet and have an emergency-neuterectomy.

I'm sure there's a better solution, but I don't know what it is. I don't want to pop it as the infection could get into his blood stream. Anybody had this happen before? Was there something we should have been doing to prevent this? Like I said, I feel stupid for asking, but I'd feel even worse if there was something I should have done and didn't
Thanks- beth.

Usually if we have any things like this we always try to get them popped and cleaned out with some form of dinfectant wash and then i use
Blue Spray which is for horses and livestock to prevent infection and sometimes have used that new skin stuf over the top of this to keep it sealed.
You know the stuff? Its used instead of a sticking plaster but is sprayed on and can sting but only for a moment and keeps the area sealed.

I would say that keeping it washed and clean is the most important thing so popping would be advisable IMO.

Strange though that the vet did not pop it IMO as usually my own vet has always popped any similar things. But we have never had any in that area specifically but have on other areas usually from a dog biting another.

We thought they might lance and drain it too but they didn't want too. It's pretty swollen beyond just the black spot, like about an inch and a half wide. His sack is the size of large orange. Two have popped on their own now, just from rubbing on the rug, and another one is forming. I don't get why new ones are forming, and it happened pretty fast.

I'm not sure what Blue Spray is, but I know the liquid skin stuff. I think this may be too ugly for that, but I'll get some.

Maybe their are more because the infection is getting rubbed into open pores.
Perhaps try washing all the area with warm disinfectant water regularly.
Thats the reason i suggested the spray on skin stuff as that would seal the boils up once burst.
If you used a needle the whole would be small enough to seal easier.

Good Luck

Hey Beth...

OMG!! Poor Grim... does he have a fever??? The anti-inflammatory should really help, along with the abx....

Bill and I have a male that recently had infected testes also.... although his was like a cellulitis, (infection of the skin..), and a big run of abx has cleared his up....

I think I would try to keep him resting as much as possible, and on soft bedding... and try to keep him on his side...(or even his belly), exposing this to air should help a little, to dry out... moist dark areas, as we all know, LOL, can hid infection, and are breeding grounds, no pun intended.....

Good luck, let us know, please...

Anne

Hey Anne, I think he feels warmer than usual, and we're trying to keep him quiet.

Phil, if I pop them, should you just let it ooze out or squeeze it? It's such a sensitive area, and I don't want to make it worse. But that may be better them letting them rub open.
thanks guys.

Are they definately boils?
If you are going to squeeze or lance do it like this...
It's easier with two people one to keep your boy happy by fussing whilst the other does the sneeky bit!
First, twiddle the skin so the lump is beween your first finger and thumb, he may not be happy about this, but sqeeze gently applying pressure, if it doesnt burst straight away give it a quick jab with a hyperdermic (remember you are still holding the lump between thumb and finger so the needle won't go deeper than needed). Then squeeze again when it bursts clean straight away, the quickest and easiest way is like phil says, spray, as after it has burst he will not be happy with you...

Nearly forgot, mic some antiseptic with hand hot water (hot enough to sweat but not hot enough to scald) hold to the area BEFORE carrying out the above procedure, it cleans and opens the pores prior to lancing.

No offence Phil, but I don't think I'd seal it at all. If the boil swells up with fluid again, it will make it harder to drain out again. The blue spray is awesome stuff though. You can get at most feed stores in the equine section. If he is in your house, be careful where he lays because the blue spray will stain.

I would only seal it for the simple reason to stop it spreading further to other pores. If cleaned 2 to 3 times daily with hand hot water and antiseptic it should be ok. It depends how much pus is inside and whether it pops and blood comes, usually if there is blood then all the pus is out and its a matter to keep it sealed to stop infection re-entering again. If it was elsewhere i would not worry so much about further areas being infected. But there is an area that gets moist and tends to stay moist quite often.

Another option would be to get some powder like cicitrin antibiotic powder or similar that will help dry it out better. And wash and reapply a few times a day.

Good Luck

Phil
