Our lovely Neapolitan Mastiff does get this affliction. It is when the third eyelid gets inflamed and swells. Many of today's vets strongly recommend tacking of the third eyelid, advising that the removal of this gland will lead to dry eye. Well with the Mastino tacking never seems to work. It always pops back out, and many have re done the surgery so many times it leads to mutilating the eye itself, not to mention that tacking cost a lot more then the removal to begin with and when you more than likely will have to keep retacking the cost add up. It is worth the extra time to find a vet that will remove the cherry, or at least a vet that is open to talking with another vet that can tell them how to do this. Many of us have vets that would be willing to talk to your vet just email or pm us. Dr. Sherrilyn Allen has a great page on this subject, also if you need to have your vet talk with her about the removal of this gland she usually is glad to help.  http://www.ironstone.net/veterinary.htm

I believe that it should be removed I found a old school vet in the Northan VA area. When I first meet Dr J I asked him what would you do and he says remove it. So that is how I found my vet. Thanks for the info. I'm going to start a movement say no to the tack!

When I had my first neapolitan I was one of those owners that knew nothing about them and their health issues. I bought her out of pity because a group of low life shitheads were discussing buying her as a syndicate and breeding the poor dog to death. So I bought her. I learnt some real hard lessons with her. One of the more painful lessons was cherry eye. They tacked it down twice. They cut under her eye twice and ruined her pretty face. She got infection in the incision. They then put her under again to remove it. Shit vets, poorly educated and greedy. I cant believe my Maxine suffered so much because of mine and the vets ignorance. Nobody touches my dogs now without me doing some serious serious reading first. Ignorance is not bliss - its a failing that makes you feel like shit when you become enlightened.
