Hello- We were at the vets the other day (Max had been sneezing from allergies) but during the appointment the vet took his heart rate and was alarmed by the 140 beats per minute. His records showed most of the other checks were in the 120/min. She asked that we check it at home when he is more relaxed and we have and its been around 120. She thought that a dog of this size should be btw. 80-100. When I talked to her a few days later she told me that since it seems to stay around the 120 count that he should be ok. She didnt notice a murmur or feel like he needed an ultrasound. She said we shouldnt worry or restrict him from play or activities but I wanted to hear from others what there thoughts were. And if they knew what there dogs heart rate was usually at. Max is 7 mos old and I'm guessing it was high during his visit from all the excitement. Fortunately he likes the vets office and he is a favorite so he gets lots of attention and excitement. Thanks
Normal for a giant breed dog is 80 to 100 but at 7 months 120 is definitely well within normal range. I wouldn't worry too much, 140 at the vet is likely from stress (are the inside of the ears pink?) I would just take note as he gets older. If you want extra peace of mind you could always do a 24 hour holter monitor to rule out early DCM.

You really took the dog to the vet because he was sneezing?
I agree I would take a young pup to the vet if he/she was sneezing often and had a runny nose. You can never be too careful, especially with the change between seasons. Could be just something small but there is no harm in checking. Sometimes peace of mind is all you need.
I had a pup, (8 mos old) that caught kennel cough from a dog I was taking to class, it developed into pneumonia, quickly, I took her to the vet, immediately, she and all the dogs were on abx, 2 weeks later she died suddenly, (in my lap), and the post showed "degenerative myositis", which when discussed with my vet, was a result of the kennel cough. (bordatella), It was a horrible experience. (I still cry over that), So, I agree with taking pup to vet if sneezing, runny nose, etc... you have to make sure it is nothing infective, contagious.. This poor immunity of this breed sucks, and it's something we really need to work on. Anne
Yep Yep, I brought a 20 week old foster in from the pound. The day AFTER I got her home she had lovely green snot coming out it seemed from every orifice. Even though she was separated from my dogs, they all still got kennel cough. One of my bitches developed into pneumonia within 2 days. Very scary and a ton in vet bills. Sorry I've been offline for awhile. BluHouse thank you for the information that made me feel better. And yes I took him to the vet for sneezing. My puppy developed Kennel cough that lead to pneumonia shortly after we got him. And then while he was under during his cherry eye surgury they noticed he was breathing tightly so they looked into it and he has something which I cant remember exactly what its called but basically its similiar to having a child with ashtma. So I do not take any chances with him. To the vet we go. I'd never forgive myself if I ignored something and it lead to something horrible. Thanks for the help again.
