Hi, Was at my vet's today, and was going to place Maddie on Cipro, but my vet remembered that Cipro has been linked to all kinds of tendon, and ligament issues, rupture, etc.... Just in case it comes up in any one else's trips to their vets. Any one else have any problems with cipro in regard to this? Heard anything else? Anne
Thanks guys, there was this info that the FDA put out a couple of weeks ago that cipro in humans has been shown to cause tendon rupture. Apparently it is doing the same thing in dogs.
Fluoroquinolones (the drug class for Cipro and Baytril) have been used in vet med for a long time with no tendon rupture epidemics. Tendon rupture is a possible side effect (because the drug affects connective tissue and cartilage) but in reality all antibiotics can have serious side effects, even good old Amoxicillin, which is why antibiotics should only be used when absolutely necessary.
BTW was your vet really giving Cipro orally? Usually that drug is reserved for humans and Enrofloxacin (Baytril) is used in vet med.
I guess for big dogs it would be cheaper but it seems like a weird choice for me, but I don't have the chart in front of me so I can never know what other vets are thinking.
Hi Robin, I had my dog on keflex for pyoderma, and I didn't think it was clearing up, as I would have liked, my vet was going to use cipro, but because he was less than 18 mos, he kept him on keflex... I have used Cipro in an older dog, for extended period of time, for osteo... it's cheap... My vet specializes in ortho.. and explained it can cause tendon rupture. If you pm me, I can get you his contact info. Anne
