My 6 month old just popped a cherry. I've been trying to massage it back in but I haven't had any luck. Anyone who has successfully got one to pop back in could you describe your technique to me. Basically, are you using a swirl type motion, ideal angle/direction, how much pressure applied?

I know he'll ultimately need surgery, but I'm trying to buy some time and see if the other one pops before I do it.

My pup got cherry eye recently. He just turned one. I was successful in massaging in his cherry eye 3 times. What i did was have him close his eye and i rubbed the lower corner of the eye in a up and down motion. This was when the cherry eye was not 100 percent out. It went back in but a day or 2 later it popped out. I did this till it came all the way out and then i could not anymore.

I did not wait till the other cherry eye popped out. I had a vet come over to my house and he did the surgery in the back yard. He removed both. You dont have to wait till the other one pops out.

We are lucky enough to have a vet who will go in and remove the other gland even if it has not popped out yet ... that way we only have to have the dog put under once. She is so good about researching the breed and listening to what we have to say. I know a lot of vets will not do this, but it is worth asking. Good luck!

Massage with a bit of ointment actually worked on one of my dogs. The cherry eye never came out all of the way, but now he's almost 4 years old...and no cherry eye in that eye. He has to be a rarity though. It certainly didn't work for any of the others, although it did buy me a good 6 months on another female.

I'd wait a while for the surgery. The other one might come out on it's own, you might end up doing prelim hips or some other procedures, so you can do it all at once. I used to want cherry eyes fixed right when they popped out, but after paying $250 (in WA) each and seeing that the dogs don't really seem to mind them, I gave up. Now cherry eyes get done when they go in for other things, and my new vet only charges $90 (in KY).

Never let the vet tack it in it never works and the eye gets infected. One poster here actualy ended up with a blind puppy after tacking in and the following infections.

I have not had dry eye in any of mine so far.

Well, as the starter of this thread, here is how it ended up going for me. My vet was reluctant to remove the gland and he also stated that it could result in Max having problems with his eye being dry later in his life. Well, I managed to talk him into doing it after all the advice I received in here. Now granted, it's not that much later in Maximus's life having just been six months now, but so far there is no discernable difference in his tear production from one eye to the other. My vet says things are really looking good and he seems to have come around that this was the correct way to go. He was NEVER in favor of tacking the gland, he basically suggested to just leave the cherry eye alone as it would not bother the dog and leaving it there would not cause additional problems later. We were absolutely not in favor of leaving it there since our dog was only 6 months old and we didn't want to look at this disgusting looking freak eye for the rest of his days. The vet still says we could end up with needing to use eyedrops if he EVER does develop dry eye, but that pretty much is the extent of the down side to having it removed. Maximus had no trouble post-op, he didn't even rub at the eye. We were expecting him to be in one of those elizabethan collar things and what a nightmare that would have been but he never needed to wear one. If his other eye ever blows out we will not hesitate having the gland removed and I doubt the vet will even question our decision this time. So I guess the bottom line is that if your vet will NOT respect your wishes, it's time to find a new vet. I showed this info to my vet and it helped.... maybe it will help you: Click This Link

In any case, this is YOUR dog. Don't allow yourself to be talked into having a procedure done that a: will cost you more, b: will not work, c: will cost you more because of reason b. d: is completely unnecessary, e: will cost you more because of reasons c & d, f: will possibly at a minimum and will probably at a maximum cause your dog to have further more involved eye issues, and g: will cost you more because of reasons b, c, d, e, and f.

Hopefully I am being clear. I almost allowed myself to by "guilted" into not removing the gland. And now, me, the dog, and the vet are all happy.

So either talk your vet into it or find a different vet to "grip it and rip it"

It does not cause dry eye, I proved this to one of my vets that always said you have to tack. I have never tacked one. I have seen so many have to keep getting retacked and this will mess up the eye more.

I had agreed to bring Felina to my vet that always said tack and let her do the stick test for dry eye. The stick was soaked before the time was up in both eyes. So it does not cause dry eye in the breed.

I have never had one that was completely popped, pop back in with massage. I had Monsters one cherry eye removed at 17 months, Ocasionally when he pulls to hard on the leash, he will look like he is going to pop the other , but it goes away on its own. He is now 5 and has never popped the other one. Cassie has never popped a cherry. She is three, I noticed when she pulls to hard on a leash she has one eye that looks like it will eventually pop, but after a day of rest off the leash it is gone.

The vet I use to remove the Cherry, does not put the dog under. He will put a numbing drop in the eye and walk out of the room for a few minutes, he then comes back we hold the dogs head and he removes it. The total cost per eye is 90 dollars. The dog walks straight out, with no problems.
