a mastino shall not be focused on the handler like brainless idiot. The American way of showing is very repulsive and bad for the breed.
Regardless if you like the style of presentation in America...fact is they are seeking an American championship title in America...so as they say "when in Rome do as the Romans do" and vice versa. The breed does not give the expression or focus to the judge like other breeds.

I agree Ronny..Dr Allan said that she placed Matteo like she did because of my showing. He came into the ring alert wagging his tail and having fun. Stacked himself.First time out of my yard. But unfortunately When in Rome etc.rules here unless you go under Italian judges
Achilles : excellent headpiece , good mass & bone . Didn't mind the collar . Liked fact the handler "Fired him up " . HATED his movement , his one hip is BAD ...Roman : good BALANCE , good movement . THIN needs to be worked & MUSCLED UP . Bean : Nice headpiece .good bone , good movement. FAT no muscle tone ...work him out .. John Ketchum
That is JUST COMICAL!!! BEAN and my others go out for a jog/walk to the end of our road several times a week (2 miles) and climb my mountains all day long all the time at free will. I feed 100% raw. His meals are strictly measured. He has great muscle tone and at 178 lbs has buns of steal!! How can you make that judgment about muscle tone from that lousy video. Is he cut up like a Pit no could he be leaner sure I guess..... but he's not fat. We walked up and down NY city the whole time I was there. You can critique him on how he showed or his movement I don't give a shit but don't go and tell me he's fat or that I need to work him or my other dogs out. I'll even add a video of Eukanuba so you can have another example of his movement...Was that the best he has ever shown NO but at least he doesn't make me want to hide my head !!!

[ Edited Tue Feb 17 2009, 01:04PM ] What level of quality are you shooting for?
"Ok, a breeder went to Italy and saw some incredible dogs.. That is great, good for you!! And you fling that in other's face?? As some sort of a challenge, or what??" YOU Better Believe it is!!! Kendail Ambasciatori Dimostri Correttezza Demonstrate Correctness
Kendail I agree with you . I don't think your dog is fat or out of shape either.I too have been feeding a diet which consists or raw deer meat and chicken but I am afraid that when the season is over I may have to change back to dog food and chicken. Ciao
The problem is the top 5 of the breed who have been shown and earned the points for the qualifying period are invited to Westminster. It says nothing of how the points were earned or the fact there are some incredible dogs out there who are not even in the ring. The judges can only go by the dogs in front of them, so if we as a breed are not putting the best the breed has to offer in the ring then who is to blame here? Don't get me wrong, I've not shown since last August. I guess I too fit into that category.
Bottom line, the judges don't know the breed because we are not presenting them with specimins to go by-at least not on a consistent basis. I do not believe the NM was ever intended to be a show dog, certainly not by AKC standards. And if you have ever been to the garden you'd certainly know it was not designed Neapolitan Mastiff friendly.
Nonetheless, I congratulate those breeders and exhibitors who are out there doing their best. It's simply a shame more aren't. For those who sit on the pc and criticize, I say get out there with your top notch dogs and make a difference! I think we'd all love to see a great NM make strides in education and Championships in the eye of the American Kennel Club.
Good point .. I garee with most of this. Alejandro Gonzalez Mastino Del Valle Grande
Kendail , I am sorry you found my opinion "upsetting". On ANY forum I have ALWAYS supported you & your dogs & I always WILL . LOVE the oldschool bloodlines you use..... I prefer a muscled up dog with GOOD definition & the last 2 ribs should be visable AND A DRIVEY ATTITUDE ......IMHO....... John Ketchum
Honestly, even if a "perfect" neo was shown at westminster, one with no obvious faults, would it ever place in the group? Would it ever win best in show?
Not at westminster, at least not any time soon. I have watched it every year for YEARS and it is a joke. I can pick the line up of each group long before the judge does as they are all the crowd favorites and/or the ones that the network and other news programs followed prior to the group shows. Only occassionally will they pick a dog that "surprises" me. So I really don't understand why everyone is so worked up about how Deppen showed Amadeo.
Yes, he does have a bad gait and he paced. I have seen him show twice in person since December and he didn't pace either of those times. It is unfortunate he did at westminster. The collar was a bit much (saw it at the last show I was at and thought that then). But I wouldn't say that Jim Deppen handled him badly. I can only imagine how stressful that environment is for both dog and handler and Amadeo is not the only dog that wasn't perfect.
Were one of the other neos better suited for the group show? Probably. But it is over and done with now. As others have been saying, the only way to change the judges opinions of the breed and to educate them is for more of us to get out there and show. But it is going to take a while for them to come around and to look at these dogs the way they should. At this point, it is all we can do. Get out there, show and educate. Jessica
Robert, It is a dog SHOW. This was the Westminster dog SHOW. It is a show. Not an outdoor arena, sweating our asses off.
Alejandro, I watched the video several times, perhaps I see things differently... How many times have you been to Westminster? I have been none... I am preparing my dogs. though, and hopefully myself.
Kendaill, Your dog is beautiful, and he moves wonderfully. You truly deserved to be there, congrats, hope you are there next year. I hope to be there. Prolly not next, or the following, but hopefully soon.
And Jessica. You are so right ! Educate! I was at a benched show last year with my dog, and the other exhibitors kept all their dogs in their crates the entire time. They talked among themselves. I lost my voice both days talking to people, attempting to educate. I possibly tired my dog out. I'm sure I did. But, if I had it to do all over, I would do it again. It was his last show. In hindsight, though, he would get some rests and I would enter another dog, so he could have rested.
The others also were seen jerking their dogs into crates post losing, etc....Yelling at them, and even striking them. They were not interested in teaching the public about our breed. Hopefully, we can have more outgoing breeders at future shows, who will get our breed out there for the public to get to know. Obviously I am not saying not to screen your future owners. But we need to as Jessica says, "get out there, show and educate."
I can't go 6 feet at a show with Caesar or Prunella on lead without being stopped, and spoken to about them. And they love it.
