My whelping kit has been in a cupboard for almost 3 years, but i recently got it out to check what was in it, and if i needed to replace anything for when i next decide to breed.

It containes...

  • A stack of newpapers

  • Old towels

  • Old face towels/clothes - Great for drying puppies off

  • Rolls of paper towel

  • kitchen scales.

  • Note pad and pen

  • Watch/clock.

  • Mobile phone with vets number already in it and number of a mentor of you have one even if its just to ask reassuring questions.- i remember when Lori was whelping for the first time she was on MSN for about 8/9 hours with lots of us in attendance!

  • Heat lamp or heat pad.

  • Bottle of detol. keep filling a bowl of warm/hot water as you need it - for hand washing.

  • forcepts

  • round ended scissors

  • petroleum jelly - just in case lubrication is needed

  • injectable Calcium Gluconate - aids contractions & milk production, & helps prevent eclampsia, or milk fever.

  • injectable Oxytocin - causes contractions a few minutes after injecting, you should only use it if your female has gone more than 2½ hours, with weak contractions without producing a pup. Overuse can cause a condition known as uterine exhaustion you will then have to take your bitch to your Vet for a ceasarian section to remove the rest of the puppies.

  • injectable Antibiotics - Use only when you are absolutely sure she has finished whelping.

Great topic Karen. Also nose syringe, to suction pups out. I like the old fashioned narrow tipped ones, over the clear plastic ones that are more common today. They are great if the pup happens to aspirate before the bag opens.

Also hemostats, and unwaxed dental floss for cords.

thermometer
Iodine

I use the old technique, but only because that is the way i was shown, ie: swing and flick the pup, head down..
Great idea Re: nose syringe Starr - Whats your technique?

and I'll remember to buy in dental floss next time im shopping...

Its worth mentioning, Forceps, homostates do the job of clamping the pups umilical cords they seal and stop bleeding, but are somewhat cumbersome...

Last time i whelped a litter, A friend who worked in a maternity hospital managed to get hold of some small plastic baby umbilical clamps for me. I have since found them for sale on the internet ... 10 light weight, 5cm, clamps for €3.00 from a company called hyperdrug.com

This is the link: Click This Link - Just key in umbilical clamps in the search window...

EDIT: I actually had them delivered to UK as delivery changes to France were excessive, I'm sure there will be other similar companies offering these for sale...

Oh yea we sling the pups too, but I can get more out by suctioning them first. I suction their nose and throats, and sometimes they wont even need to be slung, but I have one or two usually aspirate in the bags as they are coming out, and slinging with the suction bulb works wonders with them.

Injectable antibiotic .... (couldn't remember the name before) but I inject a dose of Cephalexin prior to mating and another dose after whelping...
