I have never considered pre-elective C-sect before, but after experiencing 2 emergency C-sects, I am seriously thinking about it...
I have always been told our breed whelps regualrly on the 60th day not the 63rd, I my experience my 4 previous litters have been on the 59th, 2 on the 60th and one on the 62nd day,
I want to be well preapared in advance and I am considering an elective section...

In the past when I rasied only English Mastiffs I always let them at least attempt to have them on their own. My vet would be on call and ready in case complications arrise. Then came my neapolitans and, at first, I was under the impression that they are to be treated like the English Bulldog where you AI and schedule the C-section. After speaking to many old timers in the breed, this is not the case and they should be able to pass pups. Therefore I do just as I have always done with my EMs and keep my vet posted. I have had good results with the exception of my Bella, who I have learned, must be bred and whelp like a bull dog.
If your vet is very experienced, he will probably not schedule your c-section in advance and this is why. It is very difficult to pinpoint the exact day that your dog conceived. Even if you do progesterone tests and inseminate only once, semen can live in your bitch and fertilize eggs for 3 or so days after. Therefore, most experienced vets will tell you to wait for signs to make sure sure the pups are fully developed. For instance, watch your female for temperature drop, colostrum and vaginal discharge, if she has as least 2 out of 3 she should be ready to go.
You have learned that your female's dam whelped huge puppies and large litters... You live in a foreign country where you are struggling with the language because of a hearing difficulty which would make an emergency out of hours phone call difficult... You live in a rural area several kms from the nearest vet surgery which may delay any emergency treatment required...
Faced with the fact that all these factors pose a significant risk to your female, in order to cover every eventuality and with your female's wellbeing in the forefront of your mind... What course of action would you follow?
1) just warn your vet of the possibility... 2) wait until you female has started labour and then decide what to do, disregarding the above factors.. 3) Insist on an elective section at a given date to avoid any complications...

I understand your dilema. Hmmm. How many times was she bred? And over how many days. I have been told that day 58 is safe, but if she was bred several times over several days, then they could end up premies which do not have a great survival rate. I would say day 62 to be sure they were fully cooked. SHELLY IRONHIDE MASTIFFS Click This Link

Most of mine have whelped day 61. If you bred her multiple times I would wait and really take her temperature a lot. I have also heard from day 58 on is fine. But too early and you will have problems with premies. My fertility specialist told me live fresh semen has been found alive in a bitch up to 11 days after insemination. Chilled semen can live 48 hours, and frozen 24 inside the bitch. So if you bred multiple times, it can be difficult to find the date for a planned C-Section. But once, and with progesterone, I would count to 61 and do it then. Starrsdcct Neapolitans UGM Admin
I usually use day 62,counting from the middle day from two breedings. Also keep OXYTOCIN on hand.Day 64 I'm gonna take her in.Scheduling a C-section still a crap shoot.Seems they always start in the eve and somewhere around one /two in the morning here comes PUPPIES. JAMES

Did you skip a day? or two days in a row? If two days in a row, go for the middle and schedule a c-section for day 60 from the last breeding. Starrsdcct Neapolitans UGM Admin
If you were not scedualled for a C-section and you just wanted to try it natural, What kind of signs might happen to indicate something is wrong and you need to go to the vet for a c section? Or does the vet come to you?
