The Gestation Period

The Process of Conception
Test have proved that the first spermatozoa arrive at the upper ends of the uterine horns, ant the entrance to the oviduct, only 25 seconds after the ejaculation. The interaction of sperm motility, contractions, and the flushing effect of the third ejaculation has already been discussed. The sperm and the ovum meet in the fallopian tube, the oviduct. The sperm penetrates the ovum the head of only one spermatozoon drives into the ovum membrane. The tail of the sperm, which serves only to propel the spermatozoa onward, is discarded at this point.
The ovum and the spermatozoon unite to form a zygote in which the genes of both the parents are united. The Zygote divides to form a blastocyst. By means of cell division (mitosis), the embryo grows continuously. Within a period of approximately one week, the tiny embryo gravitates through the oviduct down into the uterus. On arrival there, it has attained the size of a minute mulberry, and is therefore, known as a morula. In order to clarify this stage of development, although the morula is the result of numerous cell divisions, this compact agglomerate of cells is only very slightly larger than was the original minute unfertilized ovum. That is to say, it has a diameter of one hundred and eighty thousandth of a millimeter! The layman cannot help but be filled with amazement to discover just how far scientists have been able to go in studying all these individual developments!
On arriving in the uterus, the morula is now termed the blastula. The blastula implants itself in the mucous membranes of the uterus, a process that is known as the nidation. Nidation is completed approximately eighteen days after fertilization, and it is at this stage that the actual pregnancy commences.

In the first four weeks of the gestation period, there is no need to worry about the tiny embryos. Allow the bitch plenty of space to move around, let her have plenty of exercise, and do not increase her normal ration of food! Pregnancy is not an illness; in the wild the daily struggle for existence goes on unaltered. The initial signs that the bitch may be pregnant are to be seen in an increased desire to sleep. By about the third week, she may show a tendency to vomit; her appetite may diminish, or she may go right off her food for a day or two. This sickness and loss of appetite coincide with the nidation of the ova in the uterus. It is easy to imagine that in this phase the bitch's entire metabolism is adapting to the new situation. In the parallel developmental stage of the fetus in the human fellow sufferer, a feeling of sickness and vomiting may also occur.
It is time to begin taking care of the bitch, in more than the normal sense, when her figure starts to spread. The early signs of increasing size do not become apparent in the abdomen, but immediately behind the rib cage in the loins. At around five and half weeks, there is a bulge behind the rib cage and a clearly discernible swelling of the whole body. The teats will also have increased in size. When the bitch begins to show such obvious signs of pregnancy, then it is time for her to start to take things more slowly. By this, I mean the bitch should no longer exercise alongside a bicycle, go out with the guns, or jump over hurdles, or do any other kind of very active sport. Over the years, we have learned to recognize early signs of a pregnancy by a slight vaginal discharge of a thickish consistency, which is colorless. This discharge commences about three weeks after mating and continues right up to the end of the gestation period. A slight discharge, colorless and thickish, is an excellent sign. We have never known a bitch with a similar discharge to have a pseudo-pregnancy. However, should the vaginal discharge turn white or even yellow, this is a very definite alarm signal.
