As a rule of thumb not before the 3rd heat & not after 8yrs . Back in the late 80s & early 90s there were bitches that regularly welped litters naturally @ the age of 9+.....So much for progress HUH ?????

Hey!! all you guys, thanks!!!

This is a great discussion, which is what I was hoping for!!

John, wouldn't it be a gas if we COULD breed, and breed well and with a great result at 8?? (Bitches, guys!!), I have a great friend in Canada, who's last litter for her incredible bitch, (several yrs ago) was at age 8. I believe she lived to 11. Beautiful dogs!!

Starr, what a good point, to breed the older guys, using AI!! That really helps me.

Sorry for the long boring post this am, but just wanted to explain, even if it was in length our decision for OUR bitches. And I hadn't really thought about spaying Nella, (or Tessa), but we need to talk about it.

Nella is still winning, in fact, a lot... She is beautiful... but, in fact, this again is about her, and her health, which is of the utmost importance, (not mine, nor Bill's ego) so if it is in her best interest, we will spay her, and she will not be shown any longer. It is so important to us that she live as long as she can, not even so we can say, ....... she lived to _____ yrs. but becuz we enjoy and love her. She is hilarious. She is a riot!! She is a B____!

You are right, Peggy.
We all need to think about what is right for our individual dogs... I do like to hear others thoughts and opinions, it helps us in ours.

What do you guys think is the best age to start using a male? What if you use a male at a young age, and he develops significant problems. What then?
Do you think breeders use males at an early age, cuz they don't expect longevity, so they want to get the bang for their buck???

Random thoughts.......

Well if u really know the lines of the animals behind your boy, i dont think its wrong to mate earlier then 2 but.... me nope. Imo its for the ones with experience and know the lines in the animal in and out. They have to except and take responsiblity for what is produced.

Ya and why the hell not pull a male at age 11 and AI. LMAO, IF his sperm is still good go for it imo. I think its great if a male at 6/7/8 can still produce pups. I think some are out there..... says something about his environment and his genes/health.

Poseidon,

I totally agree with you, at the current state of the neo, I would be afraid to breed older than that. I do think that neos past (some of them), from the sturdier lines, as John pointed out, WERE able to become pregnant and deliver, with no complications up to age 8!!

I do know of a female that delivered a wonderful litter at age 8.

IMO, pregnancy is frightening, being in health care, I have seen lots of complications in healthy women, so the neo, who hides illness until she is VERY ill, has to be watched very carefully, and under a vet's care, if there is any question at all. I had a personal experience with a pregnant female that taught me a lot...
