 |  2010 USNMC Chattanooga Regional Specailty East Ridge, Tennesse September 18 & 19, 2010 Saturday: 9-18-10 Judge; James Deppen Sweepstakes Judge; Lena Moles Sunday: 9-19-10 Judge; Gonnie Schaffer We invite all Mastino exhibitors, owners, and fanciers to the great state of Tennesse with an all-star panel of American Breeders of Neapolitan Mastiffs that are some of the oldest and successful pioneers of the breed in USA. We had a great Southern Regionals in Atlanta 08 with near 40 entries !! Although TN is a Southern State, it is a perfect location as it is a bridge between the Southern States and the Midwest Region with easy access to the East. | | Question, as I am still learning all this show lingo, is a USNMC regional specialty different? For example, I know that there is the USNMC Nationals and last year there was the specialty the day before. All other specialities I have heard of (so far) have been organized by the local breed clubs (like the GSNMC), so is there really a difference between a "regular" specialty and an USNMC speciality or is just that it is organized by the parent club as opposed to a local club? Carlos, how does one go about having a premium list mailed to them if they typically don't attend shows in that region? Thanks! Jessica | |||

 | Hello every one, we really think this can be a great show and in a perfect location that will allow for dogs from the SOUTH, MIDWEST and EAST COST to finally meet up together in a some what central location allowing for a large number of dogs to attend ad with a great judging panel that will make the show worth attending. We really think we can have 60 + dogs attend this show and for many first time showers or people new to the breed and interested in meeting new faces and seeing dogs from three parts of the country, this is a show that will allow for that! | To answer Jessica's question..... A Specialty is supposed to be a special show, with a special judge (this means acknowledged within the breed community as someone who "knows" the breed and can be predictable in able to do a 'good job") and thus (one would hope) a good draw of entries. Because of these two characteristics, judges who are just learning the breed look for specialties to go to so they can see plenty of examples and can see what kind of interpretation of the standard and judging the breed people really want. Because judges-in-training are often drawn to a specialty, you often plan to hold a judges-ed seminar or ring-side mentoring and so on. Any akc-approved breed-specialty club can decide to hold a "specialty." So Specialties can be done by either the Parent club (which is the only national club and who can hold them anywhere) or a local-area specialty club who usually has their specialty within their "territory." So, yes, the parent club can hold a specialty anywhere in the country. The parent lcub can designate a specialty to be the "National" specialty which is meant to indicate that THIS specialty is being advertised by the parent club all over the country, entries are drawn from all over the country, winning this specialty is something extra-special and the judge is someone extrea-special and so forth. But the parent lcub CAN have a specialty in any area of the country if they want and these are often called Regional Specialties because they are typically meant to draw from a smaller "region". Naturally you usually see Regional Specialties being put on by Regional (or rather Local) specialty clubs...but in an area where there is NO local specialty club to do the work, the parent club will often have one or two members offer to do the footwork for the parent club. In this way, an area of the country can have a "specialty" without having to go thorugh ALL the rigamarole of a National which is typically a MUCH BIGGER deal and more ocmplicated. And people in a particular area of the club can have a "real" Specialty without yet having an AKC0approved club. In fact, working through the parent club to do specialties is often really good training for people who plan on forming a local club. And here's someting interesting to know about specialties. As you know (or should) every year the AKC assesses the numbers of dogs entrered at shows in each region and raises or lowers the number of dogs required for points based on those numbers. So i fyou live in an area where there have been a lot of dogs showing at more than one or two shows, you may see the number of dogs to get a major to go up. This is meant to HELP those who live in areas wehre there are NOT a lot of dogs showing all the time by NOT requiring so many dogs to show up to get points. The AKC does not count the numbers entered at SPECIALTIES when they do these calculations. So there is a good reason, if you are going to have a show with a lot of entries, to arrange for it to be made a Specialty. An AKC form has to be filled out and filed for a Specialty to be arranged, it costs the club $15 (at the last time I looked) to file the form. Most regional specialties (probably 99.9899% in most breeds) are done as part of an all- breed club's show, but just like the National, they CAN be stand-alone, if you'e got someone with enough experience to do the work, a location, and the extra money to do so. Does all this make sense? We had been trying to encourage regional specialties around the country for some time. It really would be GREAT for the breed if there were say, FOUR regional specialties every year at diferent times of the year and in different parts of the country. Can you imagine how cool it would be if EVERY year you had the NJ Specialty to go to (or read about and congratulate) and then the Atlanta (or chattanooga or whatever) Specialty to go to (or read about and congratulate) and then maybe the Texas Specialty to go to (or read about and congratulate) and maye the NorthWest Speicalty to go to.or hear about and read about and congratulate....and THEN at the National, EVERYONE could SEE the winners of each of the Regional Specialties and they could compete against each other! Wouldn't that be cool! But we would have to have a group in each area committeed to doing the coordination every year..becuase doing it once is fun and lots of work, but the real benefit comes in doing it every year. just thoughts. peggy [ Edited Tue Jan 12 2010, 11:38AM ] Peggy | ||||

| | Peggy, Thanks! That really helped me to understand it MUCH better! It would be nice to see more regional specialities especially to see all of the dogs. We hear about each other's dogs so often and see pictures yet to see them is person is much more fun. It looks like things are heading in the right direction and if others can pull together and put in the hard work like everyone has for this specialty, that would be awesome. Great job guys with arranging this! I put in my request for time off today so I can attend (this far in advance, I better get the time ). Jessica | |||
