What is the latest day any of you have had a bitch ovulate? I (well my vet) has been running progesterone testing on a bitch of mine for days and days now with no sign of her ovulating. We started testing on day 7 and are now on day 21 and she has still not ovulated. He has done vaginal smears along with the blood test and the smears show that the cells are almost all cornified. He says that if she had already "gone over" that the cells would start to change back to Parabasal cells which they have not. We are doing the "Premate" tests that change color and not the tests that give you an actual number due to the fact that where we live it takes 2 days to get the "numbers" back from the lab so by the time we get the results back it could be too late to get the stud collected, shipped, and have it sent over night by Fed Ex. Not to mention that the lab here charges $100 for a progesterone test. Since we have already tested her 5 or 6 times that adds up pretty quick. I am also using the Ovulation test strips put out by Wysong at home and they also show no ovulation. So I am starting to think that she is never going to ovulate. Has anyone experienced a heat where a bitch just doesn't ovulate? I know a lot of you have a lot more experience with progesterone testing than I do so I thought I would see what your experiences have been. Thanks!

Wow, Joni,

That is a puzzler!! I have only been involved in a couple of progesterone testing situations, and have not had this occur. That is crazy. Let us know what you find out!!

Good luck!

I have had this happen with two bitches where they didnt ovulate until day 20 and 21 and they never took when this happened. We use Blood tests and are in my opinion the most accurate tests.

Joni look up Canine Cryobank in San Marcos California they will accept your blood serum if you Fed Ex it its only 50 bucks for the tests and they are considered to be THEE best in the USA by many breeders. Thats who we use. I never Fed Ex anything but now that I live in Colorado I will use them only. Results are given within hours of the tests not days.

Thanks for the info Alex! When your bitches went into season the next time around did they have a normal season or did you run into the same problem again?

Anne, I will let you know how I make out with her. I read somewhere else that a woman had a bitch that wasn't ready until day 31 and was bred and went onto have 9 puppies so I haven't totally given up yet ... although hope is fading lol. But if it doesn't work out we can always try again next time ... its just that 6 months wait to try again that is the killer

Well to be honest one I never tried to breed her again since she was so aggressive towards males. The other one seems to always have issues when in heat so I stopped trying to breed her. Your best bet is to test her thyroid and go from there. I would test her thyroid after her heat passes.
