It has to be removed, based on my experience and what I have heard from other neo owners. My neo had hers come out between 4 & 5 months of age. Dr. Allen operated and on the first cherry eye (they didn't pop out at the same time of course) she tried leaving a little bit of it in and had me massage it down anytime it popped out. It didn't work (I believe she tried it on Scout's brother as well with the same results). She ended up getting that completely removed and the second one was completely removed. I haven't had any issues with her having dry eye. Dr. Allen has me keep drops handy but I hardly ever used them. I haven't had experience with tacking but based on everyone elses, it will just cause you more problems in the long run.

I am not too familiar with tacking and I can be incorrect (need other people's thoughts) but I heard it doesn't work with the neos cause the skin is too loose, it just come back out eventually. All I know is that Scouts are both completely gone and she doesn't have any dry eye issues and it seems most other neo owners have done the same.

Because of the messages on this forum and the advice I received from people on this forum, I had my girls cherry eye removed and she was about 13 months old. The doctor did a great job and it only took about two weeks till you couldn't even tell she had anything done.

I just want to thank everyone for their posts.

Tacking down can cause problems in itself, This type of surgery is ok do do on spaniels but not Neapolitans. I have heard of dogs having to go back time and time again to have the op redone, Yes, there is a risk that removing the gland will cause cherry eye, but in my opinion removal is the better option. If your vet disagrees and does not want to do a removal, then he obviously has not had a lot of experience with Neapolitans and perhaps time for a new vet...
