the discharge was a green puss like slime coming out of her WOO WOO..and that she had gotten it from her mother and was passing it on to her offspring...on down the line ect ect

Hi John..
sounds like you are talking about Puppy fading syndrome - unexpected deaths in a litter, sometimes in can be upto half the litter in many cases for no apparant reason the whole litter just fades and dies...

I have read that recent reasearch into this has found that the vaccine developed for cannine herpes can help reduce this happening, but it doesnt always mean that the virus causes it. Last year because of a problem in manufacturing, this vaccine was unavailable for most of the year.

Mine is on order with my vet, for future use and has been for 12 months.

I know of at least two UK breeders who have experienced puppy deaths shortly after whelping, having usually vaccinated but been unable to do so because of the problems obtaining it.

The vaccine is usually given within 2 weeks of mating and another 2 weeks before whelping, it is also advised to give your bitch broad spectrum antibiotics prior to mating and shortly after whelping to ensure there are no infections either passed on or picked up. Puppies obviously received a dose of the same antibiotics through the female.

Canine Herpes Virus (CHV) can be a cause of death in young puppies as well as causing smaller litter size and weight.

The outcome in the foetus/puppy depends on the time of infection:
early pregnancy - foetal death/mummification
mid pregnancy - abortion
late pregnancy - premature birth
birth to 2-3 weeks of age - death within 1 or 2 days - FADING PUPPY SYNDROME
puppies older than 2-3 weeks seldom become severely ill.

Typical signs of a fading puppy are:
anorexia
soft stools progressing to diarrhoea
painful abdomen: puppies cry continually with paddling limb movements until they die.
sometimes dyspnoea; vomiting or salivation.

Older puppies and adults may develop respiratory signs - CHV is one agent responsible for kennel cough.

Puppies can become infected in utero, during birth or by contact with the bitch's saliva. Older animals which survive probably have a lifelong infection. The virus can undergo latent infection and reactivation and further shedding can be induced by immunosupression or stress.

Diagnosis of CHV infection in puppies is usually made at post mortem. There is no treatment or cure.
Puppies less than 3 weeks old, which generally cannot yet regulate their own temperature, are most at risk of generalised disease. This is one reason why it is important to keep young puppies warm.

The only vaccine available at the moment is one manufactured by Merial Animal Health called Eurican Herpes 205 - It does not prevent infection if admisterered as above in 2 doses, it has been shown to significantly improve fertility rates and reduce early puppy deaths.

Most vets don't seem to stock this vaccinae, but it can be ordered easily, so it's best to plan ahead and order it in advance of mating your female.

Bitches that already have the virus can still be vaccinated. The vaccination protocol is as i mentioned above, 2 doses, first one anytime upto 2 weeks after mating, the 2nd one 2 weeks before whelping.
This should be repeated every time you breed your female.

I know a holistic vet who has a special concoction that save these puppies from PFS and she says if you give a drop to the bitch once a day until she gives birth and when they are born you will never have dead puppies again.

Wow Alejandro, Get the secret recipe from that vet and you are rich rich rich. Virus' are non specific, only RNA or DNA virus'. Meaning treatments are not geared to a specific organism ie. Kliebsella pneumoniae which causes lung infectons antibiotics are specific for this. But getting a cure for an RNA virus will impact to some extent all virus'. When the vet starts the corporation I want in!!!!!...............lol

The annual vaccination is for the benefit of the female, but unless the vaccination is given as the protocol states above ie: 2 doses x 2 weeks after heat and 2 week before whelping, it does not give the pups the abtibodies they need...

Insist on it phil, it really is a life saver...
Vets do not know the pro's and con's of every treatment available, as i commented on another thread recently most are General practicioners, few specialise.
