The diet of your pregnant Mastino Napoletano female
The Diet of your Pregnant Neapolitan Mastiff

A healthy Neapolitan Mastiff has a natural instinct for its nutritional needs. A well-trained dog licks the whole bowl clean in a matter of minutes. This mastino, however, never actually gets as much as it could eat, but just a little less. In our own kennels, this is clearly the reason why we have never known a poor feeder. Never begin to entertain the idea that you should pander to your pregnant bitch! Continue to give her the normal ration after mating, if possible always just a little less than she would really like to have, and you will not encounter any feeding problems. Do not give way, even though the changes taking place inside the bitch cause her to lose her normal appetite for a day or two. Over the years, I have listened to the anxieties of owners, who, filled with concern for their bitches, have started frying top-quality meat, baking puddings, almost begging their dogs to eat! This is quite unreasonable and might even prove harmful for the bitch. If she prefers not to eat up her normal ration during the first few weeks, there are good reasons for this, rooted in her pregnancy. The breeder should see the situation for what it is and cease to worry.
Only one change is advisable at this stage, and that is a little more variation in the diet. The food industry claims, quite rightly, that their compound food contain all the nutritional requirements needed by the dog. However, we have seen that a daily variation in the food put before our dogs pleases them. There is little difference in this respect between man and his dog. A varied diet sharpens the appetite. Fresh meat, cereals, milk products, fruits and vegetables, eggs, glucose, honey, fish, cod-liver oil our dogs certainly love variety! The pregnant mastino napoletano bitch should be given a diet containing plenty of vitamins, but the quantity of food should not be increased.
